I AM LISTENING…

Helping to save our bees

I had the pleasure recently to meet with Tony Ashworth who does great work in the region saving and increasing the bee population.

There are over 240 species of bees in the UK.  These include 1 honey bee species, 25 bumblebees and an amazing 224 species of solitary bees, which come in many colours, shapes and sizes. Without them, we couldn't grow foods like tomatoes, blueberries and strawberries.

It’s no secret that bees and other pollinators are facing significant threats from habitat loss, disease and the overuse of pesticides, but with a little work, your garden can serve as a fantastic habitat for a wide range of bee species throughout the year.  According to Tony the biggest threat to our bee population is the pesticides we use in our garden.

Tony runs a family business of honey and hive products based near Fareham, Hampshire, working with businesses to improve their sustainability and eco-credentials which is a corporate social responsibility. Tony is proud that he does not use chemicals on their bees or hives.  For a small annual fee, they not only provide the hive but also maintain it on a regular basis and any honey produced is given to the sponsor of the hive.

Bees pollinate one third of the worlds crops and are an essential part of the ecosystem as well as the agricultural economy. Without the help of honey bees many familiar foods would disappear. Honey bees can be part of your business too, by providing a talking point, improving your eco-credentials and providing novel incentives for staff or clients.

Tony combines his 30 years of teaching skills with his knowledge of bees, beekeeping and ecology to help others get the passion too. As well as offering hive adoption to businesses, Tony can help with setting up an apiary, training staff, giving lectures and bee experiences to young and old alike.

The service Tony and his family are providing for the area is to be applauded as not only is it helping to save our bees, it also helps our ecology.
